Dunford class 76

Dunford Bridge with a pair of EM1 (Class 76’s). It would be nice to say that I spent some happy hours photographing the Woodhead line at the end of the 1970s, but all the time, I was painfully aware that I was recording the final years of a wonderful railway. I loved everything about the Woodhead line and the Great Central. It’s loss is nothing short of a tragedy.

ELECTRA Woodhead Tunnel

This end of the Woodhead Tunnel is Dunford Bridge. The view was only visible if you climbed onto the bridge parapet, but you were invariably facing the sun or looking into shadow. Not good for photography, but the light makes an exciting picture – as if just seeing ‘Electra’ was not enough!

Available as an artist-signed litho print. Size 14 x 19in (350 x 482mm) £14 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).

The Gangers

The Permanent Way is anything but ‘permanent’, requiring a great deal of maintenance to keep it safe and operational. Out in all weathers, often in the middle of the night these men worked with their bare hands moving heavy equipment and rail. The painting shows Barrow Hill ‘up’ sidings. With G. Woodcock and Eddy Cartledge.

The original was exhibited at the National Railway Museum, York, after being published in a Guild of Railway Artists book. This picture was also given to Barrow Hill Roundhouse on permanent loan.

Garratt K1 WHR

The famous K1. The first Garratt of them all. This painting was done to raise the extra cash needed to finish the restoration and was completed before this section of the Welsh Highland Railway was reopened. All the Limited Edition prints have sold, but I still have a just a few of the 25 Artist’s proofs in stock.

Available as a numbered artist-signed litho print. Approx. Size 20 x 24in (500 x 600mm) £28 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).

G.W.R. '2884' class 2-8-0, No. 2884

To be truthful, this painting is based on the owner’s very own 5¼in steam locomotive rather than the real thing – but you can do that with a painting!

Hall Lane Junction

A Brush Type 4 locomotive, known as a Class 47 by the time of the painting, on what was once a busy freight-only link line. Hall Lane Junction is near Staveley, Chesterfield, England. An area that was once crammed with Coal Mines, Slag heaps, Chemical and Coking Plants and of course railways. All gone now, and the jobs with it.

Can be bought as an artist-signed ink-jet (giclée) print. Size up to 24in (600mm) wide. £18 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).

Kurseong

A famous ‘B’ class locomotive on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway climbing through the streets of Kurseong, about half-way from Siliguri to Darjeeling. If you would like to know about our Society dedicated to preserving this wonderful line, go to www.dhrs.org

Can be bought as an artist-signed ink-jet (giclée) print. Size up to 18in (450mm) wide. £14 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).

Ex.LMS Duchess

Available as a low-cost A4 litho print on 120gsm gloss art at £2.00 or as an artist-signed ink-jet (giclée) print. Size up to 18in (450mm) wide. £14 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).

Ex.LMS Garratt

By English standards, these were big engines and not popular with the crews. I must have seen one of these, even though they had all gone by 1958, but I sadly have no memory of them.

Can be bought as an artist-signed ink-jet (giclée) print. Size up to 18in (450mm) wide. £14 + Post and Packing for UK £3.50 (other areas please ask).
